Moving and Storage with Pets and Plants
Pets and plants are precious cargo. To protect them during a moving and storage endeavor, Smart Move offers the following advice.

Keeping Pets Safe and Comfortable
Moving and storage off all your possessions can be stressful for everyone in your family, including your pets. The following tips can help ease their anxiety and keep them safe during your move.

  • Ask your veterinarian for a list of tips on moving and traveling with pets.
  • Ensure pets do not climb into moving boxes and get packed into moving containers. On moving day, place your pet in a separate room and post a sign on the door. Alert everyone in the house to your pet’s location, including professional movers.
  • After the moving and storage of your possessions is completed, you should carry a sufficient supply of food and water while traveling, as well as any necessary medications, health records, and a leash. Be aware of the temperature and never leave your pet in the car in extreme temperatures.
  • Never let your pet out on the side of the highway or on a busy street.
  • Always keep your pet on a leash.
  • Before letting your pet free in your new house or yard, be sure to look around for anything that may be harmful. Also, secure all moving boxes and/or moving containers before pets are allowed to roam, to ensure they do not climb in them or get hurt.

Protecting Your Plants During A Moving And Storage Venture
  • Before you move, research state regulations regarding the transportation of plants across state lines. Some states prohibit the moving and storage of certain types of plants.
  • We do not recommend transporting plants in moving boxes or moving containers as they may get damaged.

  • If you are able and willing to transport your plants in your car, make sure you give them extra light and water the week prior to your moving and storage venture.
  • Some plants may need structural support during a move. To protect these plants, reinforce them with a stick and wrap them with twine before you attempt the moving and storage process.
  • Keep plants in their natural position as much as possible. Do not pile items, such as moving boxes, on top of them or lean anything against them.
  • Be aware of the temperature during your travels. If the temperature is low, you will need to bring your plants indoors overnight.
